TULSA, Okla. – When FC Tulsa was approached by D.C. United for permission to speak with Michael Nsien regarding its currently vacant Head Coaching position, Tulsa President James Cannon was adamant in his desire that Nsien remain a long-term fixture on the sidelines at ONEOK Field.

“Success breeds opportunity, and Coach Nsien’s success in 2020 with our club speaks for itself,” Cannon said in a club statement. “I want everyone at our club, from coaching staff and players to our front office, to get the opportunity to grow in their careers and reach their potential. Barring this sort of opportunity changing our 2021 plans, it is my intention that Coach Nsien will lead our club on the pitch for years to come.”

On Tuesday, Cannon and the club backed up those words, announcing a new multi-year agreement that will see Nsien remain in his hometown and build on the success the side achieved in reaching the 2020 USL Championship Playoffs.

“We are eager to build on the momentum from this past season and continue to build a strong culture and mentality that will show our fans what we are all about," said Nsien in a statement announcing his contract extension. "I can’t wait to get back to work with the staff and the strong group of players we are bringing in for next year.”

Tulsa reached the Championship Playoffs for the second time in its history this past season and set a new club record for points-per-game while also posting the club’s longest winning streak and longest undefeated streak. Tulsa suffered defeat only twice in 15 regular season contests and played to a 2-2 draw with eventual Western Conference Finalist El Paso Locomotive FC in the postseason before being eliminated in a penalty shootout.

Nsien’s influence since being appointed Head Coach midway through the 2018 Championship season has extended beyond the field, too. This year, the 39-year-old was at the forefront of the club’s efforts in connecting to the community, volunteering with the Tulsa Dream Center and serving under-resourced schools in north Tulsa. He was also invited to be a guest speaker at the “I, Too, Am America” Juneteenth celebration in the city.

“Coach Nsien’s leadership of our team on the pitch and his character off it embody what I want FC Tulsa to represent,” said Cannon. “His work and focus to build and manage our team to new heights despite the difficulties of 2020 are further proof of his ability as our head coach.”
