Visitors rallied from four-goal deficit to earn 4-4 draw in Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying

The Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying contest didn’t start out ideally for the Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Mustapha Dumbuya and Sierra Leone, but by the time the final whistle went the side had pulled off one of the more remarkable comebacks of the year as it earned a 4-4 draw against Nigeria at Ogbe Stadium in Benin, Nigeria.

The Rowdies’ defender got the start for the Leone Stars on the back line, but the visitors were put under immediate pressure by the Super Eagles. Everton’s Alex Iwobi opened the scoring for Nigeria in just the fourth minute and added a second as the hosts ran out to a four-goal lead inside the opening half-hour.

Dumbuya and his teammates steadied the game, though, and managed to grab a goal back before halftime as Kwame Quee scored four minutes before the break. The Leone Stars then produced a remarkable comeback in the second half as former D.C. United forward Alhaji Kamara – who also featured on loan in the Championship for the Richmond Kickers in the 2017 season – scored twice, including an equalizer with five minutes to go.

Also included in the Sierra Leone squad was LA Galaxy II forward Augustine Williams, who was an unused substitute after earning his first call-up to the national team following his standout 2020 Championship season for Los Dos.

Elsewhere in Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying on Friday there was an international debut for Loudoun United FC’s Kairou Amoustapha, who came on as a late substitute in Niger’s 1-0 victory against Ethiopia that earned the country its first win in this stage of qualifying.
