President Nick Ragain excited as 8,000-seat venue gets set for 2021 Championship season

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC President Nick Ragain offered a look at the progress being made on the club’s new 8,000-seat downtown stadium on Thursday as he welcomed KOAA’s Dylan Scott for a tour of the venue.

The new Weidner Field is set to open for the 2021 USL Championship season and the next two months are going to see some of the final pieces being put into place as the club prepares to enter a new era.

“From an outside construction point what I’m excited about, what you’re going to see from the street, you’ll see the bleachers finish in over the next few weeks,” said Ragain. “You’ll see the field start to go in starting in December, the canopies will be up in January, and then the big thing that’s really going to be impactful to the outside visual is the $5 million sculpture at the main entrance. That’s going to be a huge deal.”

Construction on the venue began just under a year ago, and the club hosted a topping off ceremony this past May as the final beam was put into place for the venue’s main structure. Ragain is looking forward to welcoming fans to the facility, part of Colorado Springs’ City for Champions project across downtown.

“What I love about the stadium we’ve put together is even at 8,000 seats there’s a wide variety of seating types, of viewing types. Fans will never be disconnected from the game,” said Ragain. “A lot of times you get these experiences in indoor venues. It’s pretty special to be doing this in an outdoor venue. People are going to love it.”
