Close-range save in Conference Quarterfinals shutout in San Antonio earned top spot in online poll

TAMPA, Fla. – The USL Championship announced on Monday that New Mexico United’s Cody Mizell had earned the Championship Fans’ Choice Save of the Playoffs award for his brilliant reflex save against San Antonio FC in the Western Conference Quarterfinals of the 2020 USL Championship Playoffs at Toyota Field.

Mizell put together a stellar overall performance that was capped by a crucial save late in the first half to keep the game scoreless. After San Antonio won a corner on the right, the near-post delivery was met by a powerful header from SAFC’s Jordan Perruzza but his effort was palmed up and over the crossbar by Mizell. The save was one of two key denials by Mizell as his side advanced in extra time.

Mizell’s save earned 77 percent of the online fan ballot conducted over the past weekend. El Paso Locomotive FC’s Logan Ketterer finished second on 11 percent for his save that kept his side’s Western Conference Final against Phoenix Rising FC level in extra time, while Saint Louis FC’s Kyle Morton earned 10 percent for his point-blank save to keep out Hartford Athletic’s Aidan Mesias in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
