Long-range strike that opened scoring against Birmingham takes victory in online poll

TAMPA, Fla. – The USL Championship announced on Monday the Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Jordan Doherty had claimed the Championship Fans’ Choice Goal of the Playoffs award for his long-range finish against Birmingham Legion FC in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals of the 2020 USL Championship Playoffs on October 10 at Al Lang Stadium.

Looking to open the postseason quickly, the Rowdies used a training ground routine to set up Doherty for another impressive long-range strike. A corner kick from the right was delivered by Zach Steinberger to the top of the penalty area where Doherty controlled in space and fired his shot into the top-left corner of the net to give Tampa Bay an early lead in the first of their three wins that saw the club claim the Eastern Conference Title.

Doherty’s finish earned 53 percent of the online fan ballot conducted over the past weekend. New Mexico United’s Romeo Parkes finished second on 43 percent for his late equalizer in second-half stoppage time in the Western Conference Semifinals against El Paso Locomotive FC on October 17, while Locomotive FC’s Bryam Rebellon finished third for his powerfully-struck finish against Phoenix Rising FC in the Western Conference Final on October 24.
