Birmingham agrees new multi-year contract after standout first professional season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – 2020 All-League First Team selection Bruno Lapa has signed a new multi-year contract with Birmingham Legion FC, the club announced on Friday. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

Lapa had a standout first professional season in Birmingham, starting all 17 matches for Legion FC as he played a key role in the club’s second consecutive trip to the USL Championship Playoffs. In addition to his All-League selection, the 23-year-old was also voted Legion FC’s Most Valuable Player as he led the team in chances created (35) and in shots (26), tied for the team lead in assists (5), and finish second in goals (8).

“As we begin to focus on the 2021 season, Bruno was someone we were really focused on bringing back,” said Legion FC President and General Manager Jay Heaps. “He has proven to be a dynamic attacking player in this league, he fits in well in our locker room, and we think he still has potential to get even better.”

Lapa produced key contributions in big moments for Birmingham throughout the 2020 season. His career got off to a flying start with two goals and an assist in his first pro game as Legion FC defeated rival Memphis 901 FC and goalkeeper Tim Howard in a nationally televised game on ESPN2, and he also found the net in his first postseason contest against the Tampa Bay Rowdies earlier this month.

A former standout for NC Fusion U23 in USL League Two and for Wake Forest University, Lapa said he was looking forward to remaining with Legion FC.

“I’m extremely excited to be staying in Birmingham,” said Lapa. “This year was a special year for me, as it was the first year of my career, the club gave me an opportunity, and I was extremely excited to be a part of the club. The city, the fans, the coaches, everybody took me in and helped me in my transition to this level, and I am extremely grateful for that.

“We were able to accomplish great things, some special things this year, but as a club we know that we can do even bigger things. I believe in the club and I believe in the project, and I think next year can be a special year. We’re hungry for it – we’re going to continue to work and continue to get better to bring a championship back to Birmingham because that’s the ultimate goal for all of us. So, I’m extremely excited to be coming back and I’m looking forward to it already. I miss the city, miss the fans, and can’t wait to be back on the field helping Legion FC win games.”
