Super sub scores third goal of season as teams end in 1-1 draw at Cashman Field

LAS VEGAS – Las Vegas Lights FC and San Diego Loyal SC exchanged second-half goals in a 1-1 draw at Cashman Field on Wednesday night as Blake Frischknecht scored a minute after coming on as a substitute to earn a point for the hosts.

Following the opening minutes of the contest, between 7:00 and 8:46 of the match, players from both sides came together at the center circle, united against racism, and in support of equality, diversity and compassion.

In the game, neither side created much in the early going. The first real look on goal came in the 21st minute when Las Vegas’ Junior Burgos fired a curling shot that was comfortably saved by SD Loyal goalkeeper Jon Kempin. The El Salvador international had another crack from long range with a free kick from 35 yards nine minutes before halftime that Kempin tipped over the crossbar, while Junior Sandoval also threatened for the hosts before halftime.

While its first half proved quiet in attack, San Diego almost broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half. Collin Martin played a ball forward to recent loan arrival Alejandro Guido in the right side of the penalty area, and his low cross came to Miguel Berry alone in the box, but Berry’s shot was skied well over the crossbar as the chance went begging.

Berry quickly put the chance behind him, though, and his 6-foot-3 frame allowed him to keep a ball just in play when it seemed like another attack was going to fizzle out. Berry turned in from the left with possession and after entering the left side of the penalty area picked out a pass to Martin, who controlled at the top of the penalty area and fired low to the left corner in the 57th minute for the opening goal.

Las Vegas tried to hit back quickly through Rashawn Dally after he had come on as a second-half substitute, but his low shot was handled by Kempin. Fellow substitutes Yamikani Chester and Frischknecht combined with Grant Robinson to find the equalizer in the 73rd minute, however, as a pair of quick passes after the ball fell in the penalty area off a cross sent the ball to Frischknecht’s feet for a flicked finish into the left corner, his third goal of the season.

Lights FC almost pulled out a late winner in the second minute of stoppage time when Bryan De La Fuente released Dally down the left side to deliver a low cross through the six-yard area, only for Chester’s stretching finish to send the ball wide at the back post. That proved the final chance, however, as honors ended even between the sides for the second time this season.
