Republic FC gets victory after dramatic ending vs. T2; Atlanta picks up road win againt Union II

FC Tulsa took victory in a key game for its postseason hopes at ONEOK Field, while a goal deep in second-half stoppage time sent Sacramento Republic FC back level on points with Reno 1868 FC at the top of the Group A standings, and Atlanta United 2 took victory on the road against the Philadelphia Union II as part of Wednesday's action in the USL Championship.

FC TULSA (2), RIO GRANDE VALLEY FC (1)

TULSA, Okla. – Dario Suarez scored both goals as FC Tulsa moved level on points with Austin Bold FC in Group D thanks to a game-winner midway through the second half by the Cuban forward against the Toros at ONEOK Field.

Following the opening minutes of the contest, between 7:00 and 8:46 of the match, players from both sides came together at the center circle, united against racism, and in support of equality, diversity and compassion.

In the game, Suarez almost put the hosts ahead in the 18th minute on the first big chance of the game when Lebo Moloto slipped him into the penalty area, but Toros goalkeeper Paul Blanchette was up to make the save. Seven minutes later, though, the hosts had the lead as good move around the edge of the penalty area from right to left played Eric Bird into the penalty area, and his cutback cross to the center of the box was tucked home by Suarez.

The Toros hit back quickly as in the 28th minute a long clearance upfield was controlled and sent wide to Deshane Beckford on the right. The Jamaican’s low cross was controlled by Kyle Edwards and then laid back to Luka Prpa, who rifled his finish into the left corner of the net.

Suarez almost gave Tulsa the lead back immediately as a short corner from the left allowed Solomon Kwambe to deliver a low cross to the near post from the left, and Suarez’s finish caromed off the left post and out before rebounding back to the goalkeeper. Rodrigo Da Costa then threatened for the hosts early in the second half as he controlled an attempted clearance at the top of the penalty area and quickly unleashed a shot to the left corner that was saved by Blanchette.

After other chances went astray for Tulsa, though, the breakthrough arrived in the 68th minute. A cross from the right was deflected to Martinez, who pulled a pass back across goal to find Suarez, and he roofed his finish to the delight of the fans directly behind the goal. That proved enough for Tulsa, which now enters a key two-game trip to Austin with the inside track to the playoffs in in Group D at stake between the two rivals.

Dario Suarez, FC Tulsa – Suarez scored twice and also hit the woodwork with his three shots on the night, and also created two chances and completed 20 of 23 passes in a strong overall display.

SACRAMENTO REPUBLIC FC (2), PORTLAND TIMBERS 2 (1)

PORTLAND, Ore. – Republic FC took victory as Mario Penagos and Julian Chavez both scored their first professional goals – with Chavez’s arriving in the sixth minute of stoppage time – after being brought on as late substitutes to send T2 to defeat at Providence Park. The win marked Sacramento’s fifth in a row, currently the longest winning streak in the Championship.

Following the opening minutes of the contest, between 7:00 and 8:46 of the match, players from both sides came together at the center circle, united against racism, and in support of equality, diversity and compassion.

In the game, Sacramento carried most of the play in the first half as both Drew Skundrich and Sam Werner went close to opening the scoring with shot from the edge of the penalty area. Portland had its own big chance late in the first half Gio Calixtro’s effort was punched wide by Republic FC goalkeeper Rafael Diaz, but as the second half evened out it appeared there might not be a breakthrough coming.

Sacramento grabbed the lead with three minutes to go to kick off a wild ending, however, as Penagos combined well with Chavez and Cameron Iwasa before taking the ball into the penalty area past a defender and tucking his finish into the bottom-right corner.

Portland’s response arrived in the second minute of stoppage time as Max Ornstil headed a corner kick from the right back across goal from the far post where Dyson Clapier was on hand to volley in a finish. Just as it appeared T2 might earn its first point of the season, though, Chavez came through with effectively the last kick of the game as he picked up possession on the right side, cut in toward the penalty area and then fired home to the right corner to send Republic FC to a thrilling late win.

Julian Chavez, Sacramento Republic FC – Chavez played a key role in the build-up to Penagos’ opening goal, and then produced a brilliant solo effort to give Republic FC a much-needed victory.

ATLANTA UNITED 2 (2), PHILADELPHIA UNION II (1)

CHESTER, Pa. – Goals late in either half kept Atlanta’s playoff chances alive for at least one more game as it defeated the Union II at Subaru Park.

Neither side created many clear looks in the first half, but shortly before the halftime break the visitors broke the deadlock on an excellent finish by Amadou Macky Diop. Breaking up the left channel, Diop created space for a left-footed shot that picked out the top-right corner of the net to put Atlanta up at the break.

Diop could have doubled Atlanta’s lead early in the second half when he got in behind the Union II back line, only to shank his shot from the left side of the penalty area well wide of the right post. Philadelphia saw an ambitious effort from the right side by Anges Bohui comfortably saved in the 58th minute, and 14 minutes later a long-range strike by Paxten Aaronson provided more of a test of Atlanta goalkeeper Vicente Reyes, but he was able to gather at the left post.

Bohui also went close for the hosts with 10 minutes to go with a shot from distance that slid just wide of the right post before Atlanta’s Caleb Wiley missed out on the chance to put the game away seven minutes later when his shot from the left side of the penalty area was parried away. In the second minute of stoppage time, however, a cross from the left was mishandled by Union II goalkeeper Mitch Budler and Atlanta’s David Mejia was on hand to tap home.

Philadelphia scored itself in stoppage time as Aaronson’s curling shot from the left side of the penalty area slipped through Reyes’ hands and into the net, but that would be all for the hosts as Atlanta held on for victory
