Midfielder’s second-half goal extends Louisville’s winning streak to three games

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Paolo DelPiccolo scored the only goal as Louisville City FC continued its recent upswing in form with a 1-0 victory against rival Indy Eleven on Wednesday night at Lynn Family Stadium. The victory was LouCity’s third in a road and moved the hosts into second place in the Group E standings.

Looking to close the gap at the top of Group E, Louisville created an early chance when Corben Bone found space in the right side of the penalty area and fired a low shot to the near post that was parried away by Indy goalkeeper Evan Newton. Napo Matsoso also went close for the hosts inside the opening 10 minutes on a looping effort from the right that went just wide of the left post.

Indy had a chance after the half-hour mark to make its mark on the contest, the first coming to Tyler Pasher as he fired wide of the right post off a good layoff by Tyler Gibson in the 33rd minute, but in terms of chances the game didn’t quite catch fire before the halftime break.

Indy’s Nick Moon also went close 11 minutes into the second half as he cut across the top of the penalty area from the left and curled a low shot just wide of the right post, but five minutes later it was Louisville that found the breakthrough. A pass into the right side of the right side of the penalty area by Matsoso picked out the run of Antoine Hoppenot, who controlled and then turned his marker before laying a pass back to the late-arriving DelPiccolo, who fired home to put the hosts ahead.

Indy’s Carl Haworth forced a save from LouCity goalkeeper soon after with a looping near-post header off a free kick from the right side, while in the 66th minute Bone had another good effort for the hosts saved by Newton after a clever pass by Hoppenot gave Bone a clear chance from 14 yards.

Hoppenot himself then almost added a second for Louisville when Oscar Jimenez played him into the left side of the penalty area for a shot that Newton palmed high over the crossbar from a tight angle. Pasher had a chance to find an equalizer with 10 minutes go as well after a through-ball by Moon gave him a look at the target from 20 yards, only for his finish to drag wide of the right post.

Louisville would see out the remaining minutes comfortably, however, to move within three points of Indy at the top of the Group E standings.
