Frischknecht’s first professional goal lifts Lights FC to second win in last three games with 3-1 victory

LAS VEGAS – Las Vegas Lights FC brought the undefeated start to the season of Orange County SC to an end as Blake Frischknecht and Junior Sandoval struck late in a 3-1 victory at Cashman Field on Tuesday night in the USL Game of the Week on ESPN Deportes that marked the third successive contest in which the hosts had notched three goals on home turf.

Looking to close the gap on Phoenix Rising FC at the top of Group B, Orange County took the lead in the 12th minute as Brian Iloski was brought down in the penalty area by Las Vegas’ Jose Carrera-Garcia after a short corner. Aodhan Quinn stepped up and fired into the left corner of the net, sending Lights FC goalkeeper Edward Delgado the wrong way.

Las Vegas threatened an equalizer two minutes later as Johnny Fenwick got to a deflected cross that looped high into the Orange County penalty area, but his header was saved by OCSC goalkeeper Frederick Due. In the 18th minute, however, the hosts pulled level as a corner kick from the right by Junior Burgos was met at the near post by Ramon Martin Del Campo, and the center back headed home his second goal in as many games.

Burgos had a chance to put Lights FC ahead three minutes before halftime as his curling shot from the top-left corner of the penalty area to the right corner was parried away by Due. The teams also exchanged late chances before the break as Iloski manufactured a shooting chance that was saved, and Burgos was also kept out on a low free kick.

Iloski threatened again early in the second half as he dug out a low shot to the right corner that forced an excellent one-handed save by Delgado. At the other end, Due matched him with a low save as Fenwick curled a free kick around the defensive wall from the top-right edge of the penalty area.

Due then produced the save of the night to keep the game level in the 68th minute after giving away a penalty kick by bringing down Rashawn Dally as the Las Vegas forward beat him to a long ball over the top. Burgos stepped up to the spot, but Due got down to his right to keep the low effort from finding the back of the net.

With six minutes to go, however, Lights FC found another late tally to take the lead as Frischknecht struck. After laying off a ball forward to Bryan De La Fuente in Orange County’s half, the Las Vegas native spun off his defender and was in position to run onto Dally’s through-ball after a quick combination from De La Fuente’s pass and sent home a low finish to the left corner to put Las Vegas ahead.

Orange County had a chance to level three minutes later as a deep corner kick from the right by Aodhan Quinn was recycled and came back to him on the right side of the penalty area for a powerful shot that flashed just wide of the far post. Las Vegas iced the game in the second minute of stoppage time, though, as Sandoval dribbled in from the left side toward the top of the penalty area and fired a low shot into the left corner that earned the club its second victory in the past three games.
