ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A lot has changed in the four months since New Mexico United was awarded $4.1 million in capital outlay by state lawmakers to work toward site feasibility analysis and other planning initiatives for a Sports & Cultural Center that would become the club’s permanent home.

But one thing hasn’t – momentum.

“The stadium is still moving forward,” United owner Peter Trevisani told the Albuquerque Journal’s Geoff Grammar. “We’re still working with the city on evaluating sites, even though we’re not sure exactly the timing. We still think we can move forward and do that evaluation. So, when it’s the appropriate time to be talking about a stadium, we can be ready.”

New Mexico boasted the highest attendance in the Championship in its inaugural season in 2019, averaging almost 13,000 fans per game at Isotopes Park. The passionate support helped push the club to a playoff place in its first year and helped garner support for the new project that would include a 10,000-seat soccer-specific stadium.

Support for the project does not appear to have waned during the current COVID-19 pandemic either, with state representative Antonio “Moe” Maestas telling the Journal, “The stadium is needed now more than ever and must be part of any revitalization plan.”

That view is shared by Trevisani, who believes it would be an important driver of the city and state economy as the country comes out of its recovery phase.

“I think one of the things that can help keep our economy going and can help be a catalyst for our economy and also build a bridge to a more normalized environment that we all want to get back to are public projects, and the stadium certainly would fall in is one of them,” said Trevisani.
