First playoff game at Highmark Stadium produced a classic between the Keystone State rivals

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we return to the 2018 USL Championship Playoffs and an epic clash between Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and the Philadelphia Union II in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at Highmark Stadium.

The Hounds were coming off one of the best regular seasons in their history, finishing third in the Eastern Conference after suffering only five defeats. In his first season on Pittsburgh’s sideline, Head Coach Bob Lilley had helped install the best defense in the conference as goalkeeper Dan Lynd recorded 12 shutouts, which coupled with the scoring exploits of forward Neco Brett – who recorded 15 goals in the regular season – brought postseason soccer to Highmark Stadium for the first time since its official opening before the 2013 season.

The Union II, meanwhile, were back for their second consecutive postseason trip. Led by veteran Irish midfielder James Chambers, Philadelphia’s young talent had spread out the scoring across its lineup, with Michee Ngalina leading the side with seven goals and both Santi Moar and Fabian Herbers providing able backing. If the Union II were to earn their first postseason victory, however, they would need to claim their first victory on the road against the Hounds in their history, having suffered defeat on their three previous visits

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
