Spanish legend says news coming soon, focused on building club world’s borough will be proud of

Queensboro FC founding partner David Villa shared his vision for what the new USL Champioship club will represent, and teased some upcoming news in an Instagram Live conversation on Thursday.

Some important personnel has been added to future USL Championship club Queensboro FC in the last couple of months, including the appointment of Luis Gutierrez as the side’s Technical Director and Adam Behnke as Chief Business Officer and P.J. Davidson as Vice President of Sales in the front office.

But according to founding partner David Villa, there’s more big news right coming soon as the club continues its progress toward kicking off in the 2021 Championship season.

“We can’t say anything yet, but this month is going to be very, very interesting for the people who are waiting for Queensboro FC,” Villa said on Thursday during a conversation on the club’s Instagram page. “We are excited, because when you are happy and you do something properly, you want to tell the people. We can’t right now, we’re waiting for the announcement and the timing of the announcement, but we are excited because we can’t wait to share all of the things we know not only to the people in Queens but all around the rest of the world as well.”

Of course, things are very much different in Queens and across New York City than when the club’s launch was made official last year. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit America’s largest city harder than most, which in turn has affected the potential for QBFC to get out into its new community over recent months.

From Villa’s perspective, however, ensuring the club is doing everything it can to give back to the world’s borough and provide a space for people to come together and enjoy the world’s game is going to be even more important as it returns to a semblance of normalcy.

“We are always trying to help the community, but now more than ever,” said Villa. “Soccer is always great in all situations of life, at all ages of your life. It’s a sport, it’s healthy, it’s good for your mind to do sport every day. It’s a fantastic situation to spend three or four hours in a day, and it’s always without the problems that we live with. We’ve tried to give to the people the opportunity to spend a few hours from their difficult situation happy with the soccer, helping with the community to give the best we can every day with our project.”

Villa aims to accomplish that by first and foremost making Queensboro FC a club that resonates with the city’s soccer fans. Having lived in the borough while playing for New York City FC toward the end of his illustrious career, he believes the time is ripe for the new club’s arrival, adding “I think Queens is the borough, not just in the USA but in the world, with a passion for soccer but without a team.”

That makes the priority for everyone associated with QBFC building a club that fans throughout Queens will be proud of.

“In 10 years, the most important for me is that people wake up in the morning in Queens, the people who love soccer, and say, ‘OK, we have a game today. Our team is playing in our borough, and this afternoon I want to take my scarf, I want to take my shirt, I want to go to the stadium to support,’” said Villa. “That’s the most important for us, and that’s the club that we are working [toward].

“Obviously, you need to win, you need to have a strong team, you need to have a great coach, you need to identify to Queens with a great team, but for us the most important is the people are happy with the things we’re doing and that we’re working strongly in this with the community.”
