Western Conference clash featured late drama between Rising FC, Energy FC at Casino Arizona Field

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we revisit a meeting from the Western Conference from early in the 2017 season as Phoenix Rising FC played host to OKC Energy FC at Casino Arizona Field in a game that provided plenty of late drama.

Rising FC was in its first season under its new moniker and had seen plenty of other offseason changes besides its new brand. The club had made its new home at a soccer-specific venue completed in less than three months and had brought aboard former Mexico international Omar Bravo and former England international Shaun Wright-Phillips to add star-power to its squad, with Didier Drogba awaiting his debut after arriving in Arizona late in April. The club had seen ups and downs to kick off its new era, however, and was looking to rebound after suffering a 4-0 defeat to Reno 1868 FC in its last outing.

Energy FC, meanwhile, was looking to build on back-to-back postseason appearances as it entered the new season, but the side had faltered out of the gate to win only once in its first five games at home against Sacramento Republic FC. After a 3-0 defeat on the road against Rio Grande Valley FC in its last outing – the club’s second loss to the Toros early in the campaign – OKC was looking to get things turned in the right direction as it headed to Phoenix.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
