Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we look back at a Western Conference clash from last in the 2019 regular season that saw FC Tulsa and San Antonio FC play a seven-goal thriller at ONEOK Field.
Tulsa’s season hadn’t gone the way it had hoped to this point, with a lengthy winless streak sinking the club’s hopes of a second trip to the postseason after it had made a bright start to the campaign. Things had improved for the side more recently, however, with a four-game undefeated streak that included a pair of wins showing positive signs as the club looked to the upcoming offseason and the change to rebuild.
For San Antonio, on the other hand, the playoff race was in full swing. A pair of key home victories against fellow contenders New Mexico United and OKC Energy FC had kept SAFC in the middle of the race for one of the final slots in the Western Conference’s postseason field, but those had been tempered by defeats to both first-place Phoenix Rising FC and last-place Tacoma Defiance. With the regular season winding up, San Antonio was in must-win mode to try and boost its chances of postseason play.
The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
