Los Dos’ Alvarez, Zubak made Championship history in victory against Saint Louis

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we’re revisiting a historic pair of individual performances from the LA Galaxy II’s Efrain Alvarez and Ethan Zubak, who became the first teammates to record hat tricks in the same game in Championship history when their side took on Saint Louis FC at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Los Dos had struggled to start the 2018 campaign and were still looking for their first win of the season going into their ninth game of the season. The club’s young talent was unquestionable, with Alvarez having become the league’s then-youngest signing late in the 2017 season. He was joined by Zubak in attack, while the had also seen the likes of soon-to-be U.S. Men’s National Team call-up Ulysses Llanez and Alem Mendez suit up in midfield. The Galaxy II had come off a heartbreaking defeat to Phoenix Rising FC in their previous outing, losing a two-goal lead in a 4-3 defeat on the road, and were looking to make up for its back on home turf.

Things had gone far better for Saint Louis with Head Coach Anthony Pulis having taken the reins in the offseason. The side had lost only once in its first eight games and was on a six-game undefeated streak as it arrived in California for the first of two games on the week. Among the results in that streak was a 1-0 victory against the Galaxy II at West Community Stadium, when a goal just after halftime by Joey Calistri had earned STLFC all three points. With an experienced lineup led by forward Kyle Greig, Saint Louis was hopeful of completing a season sweep in LA.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
