Mid-season clash saw LouCity pushing for Eastern lead, NCFC needing win to keep in touch of playoffs

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we revisit an Eastern Conference clash from midway through the 2018 regular season that saw North Carolina FC play host to Louisville City FC at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.

North Carolina entered the contest needing to pick up the pace in its bid to reach the Championship Playoffs in its first season in the league. The side won just once in its first six games – including losing its first three – and while it had shown signs of an attacking spark while registering at three goals in three subsequent victory, NCFC had lost three of its last four games overall including a 1-0 defeat on the road to Nashville SC that came in devastating fashion, with NSC scoring in the fourth minute of stoppage time to grab victory.

Louisville had no such issues with its position in the Eastern Conference, having won seven of its first 12 games of the season to once again place it among the leading contenders in the standings. The defending USL Championship Final-winner was coming off consecutive draws, however, including a 3-3 home result against Penn FC in which it had surrendered a two-goal halftime lead. With the halfway point of the season approaching, getting victory on the road would have proven a welcome boost to LouCity’s bid to top the Eastern standings for a second consecutive year.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
