Back-and-forth clash between San Antonio, Orange County resulted in late comeback victory

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we land near the midway point of the 2016 regular season for a Western Conference clash between San Antonio FC and Orange County SC at Toyota Field.

San Antonio FC had gotten off to an up-and-down start to its inaugural season, having taken victory in its opening game on the road against Tacoma Defiance, but having won only twice since then as the club neared the midway point of the season. One of those victories had come in SAFC’s most recent outing, however, opening a three-game home stand with a 2-1 win against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC that saw Victor Araujo and Stephen McCarthy find the net at Toyota Stadium.

Orange County sat above SAFC in the Western Conference as it arrived in Texas and was also coming off victory in its last outing as well. Roy Meeus had scored the lone goal in OCSC’s victory against Real Monarchs SLC, continuing a fine first season in California for the Belgian defender. Meeus was one of the key new arrivals at Orange County during the season as the club looked to build on the success Swiss playmaker Didier Crettenand had produced a season before by pulling European talent into the club.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
