Rising FC was on a roll going into a meeting of Western Conference heavyweights in Phoenix

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we revisit a meeting between two of the top teams in the Western Conference early in the 2018 season when Phoenix Rising FC played host to Sacramento Republic FC at Casino Arizona Field.

Both teams had begun the season well, with Rising FC having lost only once in its first 10 games to Real Monarchs SLC. The side led by Didier Drogba and newcomer Solomon Asante had also begun to hit its stride offensively, coming off three consecutive victories that saw it rack up 12 goals and eight different players find the back of the net. Coming off back-to-back road victories in Oklahoma against OKC Energy FC and FC Tulsa, Rising FC was ready to add to its streak in front of its home fans.

Sacramento had also made a strong start to the season with a seven-game undefeated streak to start the campaign. Cameron Iwasa had registered four goals to start the season, but Republic FC had hit its first real roadblock in recent weeks, especially in a 3-2 defeat to rival Reno 1868 FC the prior Saturday in which the side lost a two-goal halftime lead to suffer defeat at Papa Murphy’s Park. Sitting three points back of Phoenix in the West, finding a way to take something on the road was imperative for Sacramento as it looked to rebound.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
