First place was on the line in the West as Orange County hosted the Monarchs in a midweek clash

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we revisit one of the definitive games of the 2018 regular season when Orange County SC and Real Monarchs SLC squared off for a midweek contest at Championship Stadium with first place up for grabs for both teams.

Orange County entered the night in first place, one point ahead of Phoenix Rising FC and three points up on the Monarchs and were riding an excellent run of form on their way to the postseason. Behind standout seasons from Thomas Enevoldsen and Aodhan Quinn, OCSC was coming off back-to-back victories and had only lost once in its prior 12 outings, winning eight of the contests in that span. Victory against the Monarchs would give Orange County a potentially decisive hold on first place with three games to go in its regular season.

The Monarchs couldn’t match the form Orange County had recently compiled and was in fact trying to break a string of four games without a win that had seen it slip from first to third place in the previous three weeks. The defending Regular Season Title-holder still had plenty to offer, however, with Chandler Hoffman having racked up 11 goals and Maikel Chang eight assists so far in the regular season. Holding a game in hand on Orange County going into the contest, a win would not only put the Monarchs back on top of the standings, but give them a chance to stay there at the end of the regular season.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
