Segra Field’s official opening gave a packed house a thrilling contest between Loudoun, Charlotte

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we revisit Loudoun United FC’s first official game at Segra Field, where the side welcomed the Charlotte Independence for what proved to be a thrilling contest that saw six goals and plenty of goalmouth action.

Loudoun’s inaugural season had come with its fair share of challenges, but the side had provided some high points already including a 3-0 victory against Louisville City FC in its final game at D.C. United’s Audi Field. The side had followed that, however, with a 4-2 defeat on the road against Atlanta United 2 in its most recent outing and was looking to rebound with a big performance as it opened its new permanent home.

The Independence, meanwhile, had rebounded from a disastrous start to the season that had resulted in a coaching change, with Mike Jeffries returning to the sideline after moving into the front office the previous offseason. The Independence had pulled their way back into the playoff picture since Jeffries’ return thanks to an eight-game undefeated streak, but back-to-back defeats against Birmingham Legion FC and LouCity left Charlotte in desperate needs of all three points.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
