Late drama highlighted crucial clash for both Orange County, Energy FC at Championship Soccer Stadium

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we revisit a crucial late-season clash from the 2018 season that saw Orange County play host to OKC Energy FC at Championship Soccer Stadium in a game that provided a major twist in the tail – and a key result for both teams as they pursued their postseason goals.

Orange County had been one of the frontrunners in the Western Conference for much of the season with the duo of midfielder Aodhan Quinn and forward Thomas Enevoldsen leading the way. After reeling off an eight-game undefeated streak that included six victories, however, the side was looking to get back in the win column after going winless in its prior two outings as it looked to make up a three-point gap to Real Monarchs SLC at the top of the West.

Energy FC, on the other hand, arrived in California fighting for its playoff life. A four-game winning streak that included a 3-2 home win against the Monarchs had pulled OKC back into the playoff picture in 10th place in the standings, but after a loss in its most recent outing against the Swope Park Rangers there was still a seven-point gap to the teams above the playoff line with only six games to go in the regular season.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
