Kickers earn place in Round of 16; Omaha claims Group 6, defeats Loudoun

Saint Louis FC and the Richmond Kickers sealed their places in the Round of 16 in the USL eCup: Rocket League Edition on Wednesday evening with victories in their final group stage contests. Elsewhere, Union Omaha continued its impressive roll through the tournament so far, taking top spot in Group 6 with an emphatic victory against fellow knockout stage qualifier Loudoun United FC.

Saint Louis FC’s Keith Mayfield maintained his perfect record in the tournament with a comprehensive victory (13-2, 12-0) that resulted in the elimination of North Texas SC’s Jacob Wolraven from the tournament.

Game 1 opened tightly as neither side was able to find an early breakthrough. Once STLFC hit the front at the 2:12 mark, however, the floodgates opened as Mayfield recorded five goals in 38 seconds to take a commanding lead. That momentum carried into Game 2, where Saint Louis scored five times in the opening minute to take an unsurmountable lead and seal first place in the group.

The Richmond Kickers’ Aiden Hendricks earned his side a place in the Round of 16 with two solid victories (8-4, 4-1) against the New York Red Bulls II’s Preston Kilwien, moving the Kickers into second place in the standings.

New York took the early lead in Game 1, however, as the teams split the opening four goals of the game inside the opening 90 seconds. Richmond created separation with two goals in seven seconds, including a finish that carried almost the length of the field as Hendricks stayed back on a faceoff, lifting the ball past the advancing Kilwien as he charged toward the Kickers’ goal. The Red Bulls II twice pulled within a goal – including making it 5-4 with 1:50 to play, but Richmond pulled away with three goals in the final minute to take the upper hand.

Game 2, however, saw the Kickers take an early advantage they wouldn’t let go. Hendricks scored the opening four goals of the contest before the halfway point and New York was unable to respond beyond a late consolation.

Union Omaha’s Wesley Mims claimed first place in the group with a pair of impressive victories (9-1, 8-1) against Loudoun United FC’s Brandon Williamson, leaving Loudoun as runner-up as it advanced to the knockout stage.

Omaha never trailed in either contest, with Mims scored a spectacular aerial finish to put Union up 3-0 in Game 1 at the 1:24 mark. Union scored the opening eight goals of the contest, narrowly missing out on a shutout as Loudoun found the net in the final minute. Game 2 opened in a tighter manner, but Omaha still managed to pull away slowly but surely, taking a four-goal lead midway through the period as the scoring touch that Williamson had shown previously in the tournament eluded him. With a +49-goal differential from his two contests, however, Mims has the look of a serious challenger going into the knockout round.

Hartford Athletic’s Damon Gray claimed victory in his final game of the tournament, narrowly getting past OKC Energy FC’s Josh Snodgrass in both contests (7-3, 5-3).

Replacing OKC legend Billy Walton, Snodgrass got off to a perfect start in Game 1 with the opening goal after five seconds, and after the Athletic had reeled off three consecutive goals to take the lead, Energy FC replied back to keep the game close. A pair of costly defensive errors would give Hartford victory, however, as Gray pulled out to a 5-2 lead with just over a minute to go and went on to victory.

Game 2 remained up for grabs well into the period, and Energy FC once again opened the scoring, this time just before the two-minute mark as the sides exchanged the opening four goals overall. When Hartford went ahead 3-2 with 1:32 to play, however, it proved decisive as Gray added a fourth inside the final minute before holding off a final rally by OKC.
