Postseason clash between playoff first-timers produced a classic that went to a penalty shootout

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we go back to the 2015 USL Championship Playoffs and a memorable encounter between OKC Energy FC and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the Western Conference Semifinals.

Both clubs were in the postseason for the first time after earning top-three finishes in the regular season. The regular season had ended in a remarkable battle that saw the top four sides in the Western Conference separated by just a point, with a draw between No. 1-seed Orange County SC and No. 4-seed Sacramento Republic FC on the final day of the season leaving OKC with the No. 2 seed and a bye to the Conference Semifinals.

The Switchbacks had finished with the No. 3-seed after being edged out in their final game of the regular season by the LA Galaxy II, but had rebounded well to take a 2-0 victory against the Tacoma Defiance in the Western Conference Quarterfinals on goals by Miguel Gonzalez and J.J. Greer the weekend before. In its inaugural season, Colorado Springs was looking to emulate the success of Sacramento, which had claimed the title in its inaugural season the year before as it headed to Oklahoma City.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
