The Charleston Battery’s Nico Rittmeyer appears set to become part of the Guatemala National Team squad when international competition resumes, with paperwork having been completed to allow him to play for the country at the senior level.

A native of Savannah, Georgia, Rittmeyer qualifies to compete for Los Chapines through his mother, who is a native of the country. ESPN.com’s Rudy Martinez reports that Rittmeyer’s paperwork had been provided by the legal department of Guatemala’s Federation, allowing the process that will see him obtain Guatemalan nationality and file paperwork with FIFA enter its final phase.

The 26-year-old might have already made his first appearance for Guatemala last month, but injury ruled him out of the country’s exhibition game on March 4 against Panama in Guatemala City.

“He suffered a meniscus injury and had a knee operation, so he was not there, but he is already there, he already has his documentation,” Guatemala Head Coach Amarini Villatoro told ESPN.

A graduate of the Battery’s Academy program, Rittmeyer has made 78 appearances for the club over the past three seasons after competing collegiately at both the University of North Carolina and the College of Charleston. An attacking midfielder, Rittmeyer has recorded six goals and five assists in league action for the Battery, and in 2018 was named the Championship’s Player of the Week for Week 20 of the regular season.
