First league meeting between Rowdies, Battery provided a five-goal thriller at Al Lang Stadium

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we return to early in the 2017 season as the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Charleston Battery squared off at Al Lang Stadium for a five-goal thriller that saw both sides hold leads before the game was decided in the final minutes in dramatic fashion.

The Rowdies had made a flying start at home to their first season in the Championship, taking three consecutive victories at Al Lang Stadium. Tampa Bay had also come away with a good point in a midweek clash on the road against FC Cincinnati as former German international Marcel Schafer scored with a trademark long-distance blast, while the hosts also counted former England international Joe Cole and club legend Georgia Hristov among its attacking threats.

The Battery, meanwhile, had made their own positive start to the season, winning three games our of four to maintain their place among the firm contenders in the Eastern Conference. A 5-0 victory at home against the Rochester Rhinos in their prior outing – which saw Jamaican international Romario Williams register a hat trick in the space of 11 first-half minutes – had Charleston flying high as they arrived for their first clash with Tampa Bay in league action.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic 90 minutes of Championship action.
