A red-hot Jerome Kiesewetter had El Paso rolling as Sacramento visited Southwest University Field

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we revisit the first meeting between El Paso Locomotive FC and Sacramento Republic FC, two sides that would end up squaring off in the Western Conference Semifinals of the 2019 USL Championship Playoffs at the end of the campaign.

First-year side Locomotive FC had quickly found its feet in the Championship, having posted more wins than defeats over its first nine games of the regular season. The side had been boosted by the early-season arrival of former U.S. Men’s National Team forward Jerome Kiesewetter, who had recorded a pair of goals in back-to-back games against Colorado Springs Switchbacks and New Mexico United as the hosts aimed to continue a four-game undefeated streak.

Things had been a little more up-and-down for Republic FC, which had won three of its first five outings of the season, only to suffer defeats in three of its next five contests as it arrived in El Paso. Coming off a 4-1 defeat to Donner Pass Derby rival Reno 1868 FC in its last league outing, Sacramento was looking to bounce back and pick up its third road win of the young season.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic 90 minutes of Championship action.
