It was an outing for the record book by Republic FC, but the hosts’ defense emerged unscathed

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we revisit a game that still defies belief almost two years on. Sacramento Republic FC set a league record that still stands when it visited San Antonio FC on June 16, 2018 at Toyota Field, but somehow came away without a point to show for it.

Republic FC had gone undefeated in its last three outings, winning twice, as it headed to Texas for the second meeting of the season between the clubs. Sacramento had won on the opening weekend of the regular season as goals by Keven Aleman and Christian Eissele had lifted the side to a 2-1 victory at Papa Murphy’s Park.

San Antonio, though, had been solid at home previously in the 2018 campaign, entering with a 3-1-2 at Toyota Field after a 2-1 victory against the Portland Timbers 2 in its previous outing. It also counted in its roster Diego Restrepo, who was coming off a career year in 2017 that saw him named the Championship’s Goalkeeper of the Year.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic 90 minutes of Championship action.
