Miller, Kelly help Independence grab late win; Lewis lifts Battery past Atlanta

The LA Galaxy II got their season off to a flying start against Rio Grande Valley FC, while the Charleston Battery opened with a win against Atlanta United 2 and the Charlotte Independence's Brandon Miller reached a notable milestone as his side downed Sporting Kansas City II on the road in Sunday’s action in the USL Championship.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY FC (1), LA GALAXY II (5)

EDINBURG, Texas – Kai Koriniuk scored twice and 17-year-olds Cameron Dunbar and Mauricio Cuevas each had a goal and assist to lead Los Dos to victory against the Toros at H-E-B Park.

The Toros opened brightly and almost took the lead in the sixth minute when Robert Coronado hit the right post with a drive from the top of the penalty area, the rebound corralled by Los Dos goalkeeper Eric Lopez. The Galaxy II took the lead in the 13th minute, however, as Kai Koreniuk ran onto a through-ball by Carlos Harvey in the left side of the penalty area and slid his finish into the right corner of the net.

Los Dos doubled their lead on the half-hour mark when Dunbar picked up possession in space on the right side. The 17-year-old drove forward and put home a beautiful finish to the bottom-left corner to mark his professional debut with a goal. The Toros almost pulled a goal back just before halftime when Timo Mehlich and Luka Prpa combined to set up Isidro Martinez, but his finish went high of the target.

The Toros almost got a slice of fortune early in the second half when a ball deflected off Galaxy II defender Isaac Bawa toward his own goal, only for Lopez to claw the ball off the line. Los Dos, meanwhile, continued to make the most of their chances as a low cross from the right by Dunbar came to Augustine Williams, whose second effort put the ball into the net. Los Dos then made it four as Koreniuk broke in on the left and shot low to the right corner in the 67th minute, and while the Toros pulled a goal back late through Prpa, Cuevas added a fifth for Los Dos off a perfectly-placed free kick to the left corner.

Cameron Dunbar, LA Galaxy II – Dunbar shone in his first professional outing, scoring an outstanding goal and providing a beautiful assist to set his side on the way to victory.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY II (1), CHARLOTTE INDEPENDENCE (2)

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Brandon Miller posted a 10-save performance as he surpassed 300 regular-season saves for his Championship career, and Dane Kelly scored a late winner to give Charlotte victory on the road against Sporting II at Children’s Mercy Park.

Sporting II took the early initiative and capitalized on their solid start as they took the lead in the 19th minute on an own goal by Independence defender Jack Maher, who turned a low cross by Sporting II’s Amadou Dia into his own net. It didn’t take long for the Independence to respond, however, as Derek Gebhard blocked an attempted clearance by Sporting II goalkeeper Richard Sanchez 25 yards from goal and finished calmly into the open net.

Miller came up big to keep the game level throughout the contest, making a key save just before halftime to keep out a diving header by Wilson Harris to keep the game level at the break. Miller had to be sharp again early in the second half to keep out a well-struck shot by Ze Pedro and then had to make another pair of good saves to keep out shots by Fredinho and Wan Kuzain as the game entered its final quarter.

With five minutes to go, however, Kelly kept alive a cross by Luke Haakenson from the left and after having his initial shot blocked the Jamaican put away his second chance into the left corner of the net. Enzo Martinez almost added a third for the visitors on a deflected shot that went just wide of the right post three minutes later, but the Independence saw out the remaining minutes to pick up a big road win to start the season.

Brandon Miller, Charlotte Independence – Miller posted 10 saves to keep the Independence in the game throughout the second half, allowing Kelly’s goal to grab all three points for the visitors.

ATLANTA UNITED 2 (0), CHARLESTON BATTERY (1)

KENNESAW, Ga. – Zeiko Lewis got the Battery off to a winning start as his second-half goal earned victory against Atlanta at Fifth Third Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Atlanta had the first clear look in the third minute when Jack Gurr was played in behind the defense by Amir Bashti but sent his finish wide of the left post. Chances proved limited for both sides in the opening half, however, until two minutes before the break when Bashti pushed forward into space from midfield and launched a shot from 30 yards that Battery goalkeeper Phil Breno tipped onto the crossbar before the rebound was cleared to safety.

Lewis threatened for Charleston 10 minutes into the second half with a curling shot from 20 yards that was comfortably saved by Atlanta goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard, but then just past the hour-mark a handball by Atlanta’s William Reilly sent Lewis to the penalty spot. The Bermuda international show low into the right corner to put the Battery ahead.

The club’s leading scorer a season ago, Lewis proved the Battery’s biggest threat again and was denied on a low shot by Lundgaard with 19 minutes to go. His penalty kick proved enough, however, as Atlanta couldn’t capitalize on its late pressure to find an equalizer.
