Former UCLA Standout Set for Second Professional Season

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC Sporting Director Tim Howard and Head Coach Tim Mulqueen announced the acquisition of Matt Hundley on loan from Colorado Rapids. The 19-year-old forward spent the 2019 season with Colorado Springs Switchbacks on loan from Colorado Rapids.

Hundley turned pro after just one season at UCLA. With the Bruins, the freshman led the team with five goals in 19 appearances, primarily as a midfielder. Hundley made 14 starts and tallied a pair of multi-goal games.

“Matt is one of the best young attacking players in the country,” said Mulqueen. “His ability to beat defenders off the dribble will unbalance any defense. He’s an exciting player to have on the team.”

The Littleton, Colorado native played for the Colorado Rapids Academy U-19 club during the 2017-18 campaign before he signed a four-year homegrown contract in January of 2019. He became the ninth Development Academy player to sign a first-team contract with the Rapids.

“Matt is a player I had a chance to be around last season with the Colorado Rapids,” said Howard. “His pedigree is as a dynamic forward has us extremely excited to add him to our group. This loan deal is the first that we’ve done with the Rapids, and it’s a relationship that we look forward to continuing in the future.”

Hundley made his professional debut in a road match against LA Galaxy II on Mar. 10, 2019. His first professional start came three weeks later on the road against Phoenix Rising. In his 27th appearance of the season, Hundley scored his first professional goal in a 2-0 victory over LA Galaxy II.

Internationally, Hundley was named to the US U-19 men’s national team 2019 three-team training camp. He was also named to the U-19 men’s national team for the first-ever U.S. Soccer men’s youth national team summit camp in January 2018 and the U.S. U-17 men’s national team camp for the World Cup.

The club’s roster now consists of 19 players as they gear up for the 2020 season.

Memphis 901 FC hopes to build on a successful inaugural season where they averaged over 6,500 fans per game—the ninth highest attendance in the league, second among expansion teams.
