RICHMOND, Va. – (Wednesday, February 12, 2020) – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce that they will travel down to Newport News to face USL League Two side Lionsbridge FC Wednesday, May 20. If the Kickers are to advance in the 2020 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the match will be rescheduled to a later date. Tickets for this match will be available at LionsbridgeFC.com. 

 

“Playing Lionsbridge gives us a competitive game for our players and connects us to another great club in our area,” commented Kickers Sporting Director and Head Coach Darren Sawatzky. “Having the ability to work with them in regards to players helps the player pathway and opens more doors to the players that play for Lionsbridge. We look forward to the game.”

 

This match will mark the second time in as many seasons that the Kickers will make the trip down to the campus of Christopher Newport University. In the last match, Richmond put away five goals and posted a shutout. Current Kickers midfielder Greg Boehme opened the scoring after just two minutes before taking a 3-0 lead into the halftime break. The Kickers would put away two more goals in the second half including one from forward Charles Boateng and Richmond United academy player Alexander Levengood. 

 

“We’re excited about the opportunity to play the Richmond Kickers again in 2020 and to bring a professional side to our community,” Lionsbridge FC head coach Chris Whalley said. “It’s great to provide a pathway for our players to move onto the professional level with the longest running club in the country.”

 

In addition to the match, a partnership between the two clubs will allow Lionsbridge FC to send players to train with the Kickers throughout the summer months.
