MEMPHIS, Tennessee – On Tuesday Sporting Director Tim Howard and Head Coach Tim Mulqueen announced that midfielder Rafael Mentzingen would join Memphis 901 FC for the 2020 season, pending league and federation approval.

“Rafa is a tremendous winger that has a great ability to drive past opponents and finish off plays,” Mulqueen said.

Last season Mentzingen scored six goals and tallied seven assists over 15 starts.

“Rafa previously played for Ben Pirmann in Detroit and after an excellent first professional season in League One, he became a priority off-season signing,” Mulqueen said.

Mentzingen spent last season with Lansing Ignite. Prior to that he played Division I soccer for Valparaiso University and spent summers playing in the National Premier Soccer League, with both Lansing United and Detroit City.

During his time at Valparaiso, Mentzingen was named First-Team All-Missouri Valley Conference, MVC All-Tournament Team and United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Second Team.

Mentzingen joins new signings Zach Carroll and Mark Segbers on the 901 FC roster along with nine returners from 2019: Captain Marc Burch, Brandon Allen, Pierre Da Silva, Liam Doyle, Raul Gonzalez, Triston Hodge, Dan Metzger, Duane Muckette and Leston Paul.

Memphis 901 FC hopes to build on a successful inaugural season where they averaged over 6,500 fans per game—the ninth highest attendance in the league, second among expansion teams.
