HARTFORD, Conn. – Hartford Athletic announced on Wednesday the club had re-signed Massachusetts native Mac Steeves for the 2020 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval.

Steeves is the seventh player from the 2019 roster who will return in 2020. He joins Dre Deas, Alex Dixon, and Ever Guzmán as forwards on the current squad.

Steeves will be remembered most for scoring the first goal at home in Athletic history. In the 10th minute of the inaugural home match on May 4th against the Charlotte Independence, Steeves snuck behind the defense and chipped the ball over the on-rushing keeper and into the net.

Steeves also scored the last home goal for the Boys in Green in 2019, finishing from in close against Portmore United FC in the season’s final friendly match.

Prior to last season, Steeves played for the Houston Dynamo and their USL Championship partner Rio Grande Valley FC after being selected in the Second Round of the 2018 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

Steeves had previously played collegiately at Providence College where he scored 35 goals, good for second all-time in Friars history. Steeves was named to the All-Big East First team twice during his career at Providence and in 2014 was named the NCAA College Cup Most Outstanding Offensive Player.

1868 FC SIGNS CURACAO INTERNATIONAL: Reno 1868 FC announced on Tuesday it had signed Curaçao international Ayrton Statie for the 2020 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval.

“Statie’s a player that’s represented his national team, I think if you watched the Gold cup you saw a very good national team in Curaçao,” said Reno Head Coach Ian Russell. “He’s a left back that really likes to get forward, and is really strong in the tackle. He’s a good one-on-one defender who works extremely hard off the ball.”

The 25-year-old has made 12 appearances for his country and was selected for the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup where he made five appearances, including starting in the country’s Quarterfinal contest against the United States.

BATTERY ANNOUNCE TWO MORE RETURNEES: Midfielder Dante Marini and forward Romario Piggott will both be back in the Charleston Battery’s colors for the 2020 Championship season after the club announced their return this week.

Marini has made 113 appearances in the regular season for the Battery since joining the club for the 2014 Championship season and had a career year in 2019 with four goals that all proved to be game-winners, helping the Battery reach the USL Championship Playoffs for a ninth consecutive season. Marini’s four goals last season doubled his career total in the Championship.

Piggott, meanwhile, enters his second season with the Battery after recording three goals and three assists in 26 league appearances for the club in 2019. A former player for USL League Two’s Myrtle Beach Mutiny, Piggott has previously appeared for the Panama U-20 National Team.
