SAN DIEGO – San Diego Loyal SC announced its first signing in club history on Wednesday morning as San Diego native Sal Zizzo was revealed in its latest landmark on the road to the 2020 USL Championship season.

A veteran defender that played domestically in both Germany and Major League Soccer and made one appearance for the U.S. Men’s National Team, Zizzo last played for Atlanta United FC in the 2018 season. The 32-year-old made 168 regular season appearances in Major League Soccer during his career, winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield with the New York Red Bulls in 2015 and MLS Cup with Atlanta in 2018.

“Playing professionally in my hometown is something I’ve always dreamed of doing,” said Zizzo upon becoming the first signing for Manager Landon Donovan’s squad.

San Diego Loyal SC will kick off its inaugural season in the USL Championship next March at Torero Stadium on the campus of the University of San Diego.
