HARTFORD, Conn. – Hartford Athletic announced on Tuesday it had acquired Kevin Politz via transfer from USL League One club Greenville Triumph SC, pending league and federation approval. Politz becomes the 11th player signed by the Athletic for the 2020 USL Championship season.

Politz, a center back, was a defensive anchor for Triumph SC as it reached the 2019 League One Final in the league’s inaugural season. He started 25 games for the club, making 27 total appearances across 2,242 minutes played. Politz ended the season with a total of 74 clearances, 10 defensive blocks and 26 interceptions and was twice named to the USL League One Team of the Week.

The 23-year-old was a former member of the New York Red Bulls Academy and turned professional prior to the 2018 as a Homegrown signing with the Red Bulls. That year he featured prominently on loan in the Championship for the New York Red Bulls II, helping the side reach the Eastern Conference Final of the 2018 USL Championship Playoffs.

Politz made 24 appearances for the Red Bulls II, recording 85 clearances, 58 interceptions and 15 blocks for the club while posting a 70.2 percent success rate in duels and 65.9 percent success rate in aerials.

Prior to joining the professional ranks, Politz played collegiately at Wake Forest, where he earned two Atlantic Coast Conference All-Conference selections and was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 as the Demon Deacons reached the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament. While in college, Politz also competed for the New York Red Bulls U-23 in USL League Two where he was named to the All-Eastern Conference Team as the Red Bulls U-23 won the Mid Atlantic Division.
