As one Riverhounds Development Academy team headed across the pond, a few others were defending their home turf.

Girls ECNL action was the big event of last weekend at Montour Junction Sports Complex in Coraopolis, and the 2005 Girls are out to the kind of start that could make this a special season.

The 05 Girls are 3-0-1 on the young season, giving them an Ohio Valley Conference-leading 10 points, after a draw Saturday and a win Sunday against top opposition.

The team could have a perfect record after Julia Lozowski staked them to a lead in their first match, but a late free kick goal after a foul call that had the Hounds steaming forced a 1-1 draw with FC Pride (Ind.). The next day, the Hounds fell behind against the Indiana Fire, but the team roared back and finished the job with goals by Sophia Spataford and Ava Boyd earning a 2-1 win.

Also picking up wins on the weekend were the 01/02 Girls, who bounced back from a Saturday loss to top the Indiana Fire, 1-0, on a Taylor Hamlett goal set up by Justine Appolonia. The 03 Girls defeated FC Pride in their first match, as Tessa Dellarose continued her high-scoring ways with both strikes in a 2-1 win.

While those matches were going on, the 2007 Boys were packing up to leave for Scotland, where they are spending a week training at the Glasgow home of famed club Rangers. The trip began with a rainy Tuesday night match against the academy side from Dundee United, the first of three scheduled matches on the trip.
