Columbus Day weekend is always a big one for soccer tournaments, and multiple Riverhounds Development Academy teams brought home trophies from their voyages last weekend.

It was a big weekend for the 2006 age group, as the boys won their division Sunday at the Penn FC Coppa Classico in Central Pennsylvania, while the girls were champions after three days of play at the Women and Girls in Soccer (WAGS) Tournament in northern Virginia.

The 06 Boys bounced back from a 3-2 loss in their opening match of the Coppa Classico to win the rest of their games, culminating with a comfortable 4-0 win over Harrisburg club Capital Area SA. Peter Notaro, Adam Thompson, Liam Park and Ben Bigi scored in the championship game.

In the same tournament, the 2006 RDA II side went undefeated in their division with a 2-0-2 record. That mark was good enough for second in the five-team round robin, as they finished behind only Cockeysville FC (Md.), which went 3-0-1 after playing a scoreless draw with the Hounds.

Also playing in a division with only round-robin play, the 2010 RDA East Girls finished as champions atop a group where parity reigned, as every team won a match. The Hounds were the only side to win two, however, as they finished 2-1-0 and scored 15 goals in three matches to top the table.

Meanwhile, in Virginia, the 06 Girls let almost nothing past them. The Hounds conceded only a single, first-day goal in five matches, and Lola Abraham and Ally Ruiz scored second-half goals in a 2-0 triumph in the final against Coppermine Force (Md.).

The 2004 Girls also swept through the competition in their showcase group at the WAGS Tournament, going 3-0 against opposition from Philadelphia; Richmond, Va.; and Wilmington, Del. Despite the wake-up call of being scored upon in the first 10 seconds of their opening match against Delaware FC, the 04s went on to outscore their opponents 10-4. Mary Kate Lape had a team-high four goals on the weekend.

The 2007 Girls nearly brought home their own WAGS trophy, reaching the championship match in their division. The final was an all-western Pennsylvania matchup that couldn't have been more evenly matched, but Century Gold emerged as the winners on penalty kicks, 4-3, after the two sides played through 70 scoreless minutes.

Back at the Coppa Classico, the 2010 Boys from the RDA East also reached the final of their age group, scoring 24 goals in their first three matches before falling 2-1 in a tight final match against a PA Classics team playing close to home. The 2007 Boys also were finalists, suffering their only loss of the weekend by a 3-1 score against hosts Penn FC in the title game.

• The 04 Girls won all three matches in their showcase group at the event, finishing with a 3-1 victory over FC USA Philadelphia. Mary Kate Lape scored twice, and Kendall Walton had the Hounds' other goal.

• The luck of the penalty spot didn't go the way of the 07 Girls, who lost 4-3 on penalties in their championship game after playing to a highly competitive 0-0 draw with Century Gold.

Sunday, Oct. 13

At the Penn FC Coppa Classico in Central Pa.:

• The 06 Boys are champions after a reasonably comfortable 4-0 win over Capital Area SA. Peter Notaro, Adam Thompson, Liam Park and Ben Bigi scored in the trophy-clinching match. To reach the final, the 06s won their final group match earlier in the day, 4-1 over Manalapan SC (N.J.). JJ Sims scored twice to clinch the top spot in the group, while Notaro and Logan Pappert also found the net.

• The 06 RDA II Boys ensured they would finish at least second in their round-robin division with a 4-0 win over PA Classics and a 0-0 draw against Cockeysville (Md.) FC to finish 2-0-2 in the tournament. Cockeysville won its final match later in the day, however, which gave the Maryland club the top spot with a 3-0-1 record.

• It was off to the final for the 10 East Boys, who are hitting their stride after a 7-0 semifinal win over Buckingham United. They faced PA Classics in the championship game, but the Hounds came up just short in a 2-1 defeat.

• After winning their group, the 09 RDA II Boys ran into a big, physical Coventry Hurricanes side in their semifinal match, and the Eastern Pa. club advanced with a 7-0 win.

At the Women and Girls in Soccer Tournament in Northern Virginia:

• The 06 Girls produced a strong performance to dispatch Southwestern Youth Association (Va.), 3-0, and win their group. Lola Abraham scored all three goals with help in attack from Ally Ruiz, Jadyn Coy and Ava Brucker, and the victory set up an all-Western Pa. semifinal against Beadling North. The semi between two of the region's top soccer programs was a scrappy contest, but goals by Abraham and Coy put the RDA through to the final Monday against Maryland's Coppermine Force.

• The 07 Girls powered through to the knockout rounds with a 5-0 win over Piedmont Triad (Va.). Simone Sharpless scored twice, and Melina Gill, Emily Schupansky and Sierra Dupre rounded out the scoring. Later in the day, the 07s booked their spot in the final with a 2-0 win over Century North that was secured by a Sharpless free kick and a goal by Dupre that was set up by a great run from Schupansky. In Monday's final, it will be another Century side -- Century Gold -- awaiting the RDA in what should be a competitive all-Western Pa. final.

• The 04 Girls made it 2-for-2 in their showcase division with a 2-1, come-from-behind victory over the Richmond Kickers. Audrey Bianco scored and Mary Kate Lape took the winning penalty kick for the Hounds, whose back line was excellent in the second half to shut down the Kickers.

• The 07/08 RDA II Girls shook up the lineup and had a much better performance, especially defensively, but they fell 2-0 to Lee-Mt. Vernon (Va.).

Saturday, Oct. 12

At the Penn FC Coppa Classico in Central Pa.:

• The 06 Boys were hard-luck losers, falling 3-2 in their opening match against in-state foe Celtic FC. Cam Loveland had both goals in the defeat. The team bounced back in match No. 2 on the day, playing well and getting a 3-0 win over Hershey Elite with goals by Zach Nash, JJ Sims and Jackson Suski.

• The 06 RDA II Boys pushed most of the right buttons, including holding more than three-quarters of possession, but they couldn't cash in one of many chances in a 0-0 draw with E.Pa. side Buckingham United.

• The 09 RDA II Boys got two goals each from Max Lofgren and Liam Jones in a 7-1 romp against Manchester Township (N.J.). Noah Hickman, Devin Sartorial and Avram Zinck rounded out the Hounds' scoring.

• The 07 Boys are off to a flying start with a 5-0 win over Cocalico SC and a 4-0 win over Keystone FC. Nicolas Squeglia scored twice, and Aidan Thomas, Finn Kichi and Ethan Voight-Cherna netted goals in an opening game the Hounds dominated defensively, while Squeglia, Kichi, JJ Vozar and Wyatt Catchen scored in the second match. Sam Wessel mad a diving save on an early set-piece header against Keystone to make it a two-clean-sheet day.

• The 07/08 RDA II Boys side also was a double winner, topping FC USA Philadelphia by hanging on for a 3-2 win before zipping past Cockeysville (Md.), 7-0. Graham Linz, Sutton Huele and AJ Marcotte had goals as the Hounds never trailed against FC USA, but the team had to dig deep the final five minutes to keep the Philadelphians from tying. Dalton Young scored twice, and Theo Tedesco, Michael Bishop, Huele, Michael McDonald and Colton Honker scored in the second win.

• The 10 East Girls collected their first two wins of the season, defeating Penn FC by a 6-2 score before overcoming a slow start to top Baltimore Union, 5-0.

• The 10 East Boys mirrored the results of the 10 East Girls, playing with high energy and confidence to beat Capital Area, 5-2, before easing their way to a 12-0 win over WRLU.

• Analyse Bauer scored both goals to start the 08 East Girls with a 2-0 win over Penn FC, and the team backed that up with another shutout victory, 3-0, over Harford FC (Md.).

At the Women and Girls in Soccer Tournament in Northern Virginia:

• The 06 Girls snagged two wins, defeating Freehold (N.J.), 3-0, and the Charlotte Independence South (S.C.), 3-1. Center back Natalie Figura was outstanding leading the back line, while Jayden Coy, Caroline Liptak and Lola Abraham scored in the opener. The team was a little less sharp in its second match, but still secured victoy with two goals by Meredith Ashbaugh and a penalty kick converted by Liptak.

• Sierra Dupre was the catalyst with both goals, but it was a total team comeback for the 07 Girls, who rallied to win 2-1 over FC Alliance (W.Va.) in their first match. Dupre added two more goals, and Sierra Sharpless had the other in the second match of the day, a 3-0 win over Northern Virginia SC.

• The 04 Girls got a wake-up call from Delaware FC, which scored 10 seconds into the game, but the Hounds got things under control and went on to a 5-2 win. Alexis Tylenda scored twice, and Olivia Graham added one as some of the 2005 Girls played up with the team. Audrey Bianco scored and was dangerous all day after returning from an injury, and Mary Kate Lape also scored in the win.

In Ohio North League matches in Sylvania Twp., Ohio:

• The 08 Boys had plenty of goals but mixed results. Zach White scored a hat trick, and Calder Mahan also scored in a 6-4 loss to hosts Pacesetter SC, but the Hounds rebounded with a 4-3 win over Team Challenger behind goals by Brody Kennedy, Luca Fuerte, White and Owen Shearer.

• The 09 Boys played without subs and gutted out an excellent 2-2 draw against Pacesetter SC. The team kept the momentum going to win a 6-3 match against Team Challenger, as Harlan Smith netted a hat trick, Warren Agostoni scored twice and Adam Figura also added a goal.
