Extending its winning streak to five games, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (11-3-8) downed New York Red Bulls II (14-5-5), 2-1, on Wednesday at MSU Soccer Park. Here’s how Pittsburgh earned its first-ever road victory against Red Bulls II.

36’ Joe Greenspan assisted by Kenardo Forbes

After falling behind 1-0, the Hounds relied upon a set piece to get even.

Taking the corner kick, Kenardo Forbes times his run-up with Joe Greenspan (green arrow), who will simultaneously fall to the back post. This move allows the 6-foot-6-inch defender to create space and place a header into the back of the net.

84’ Neco Brett assisted by Anthony Velarde

With the score even in the waning minutes, the Hounds turned to the fast break.

After Anthony Velarde (yellow arrow) gathered a long ball, he sprinted into the team’s attacking third. To his right, Neco Brett (green arrow) also attacked the Red Bulls II backline. As Velarde’s inside passing lane is cut off, he elects to send a ball to the left of the defender in front of him.

From here, Brett chases down the sphere and alludes another defender, using his momentum against him. New York goalkeeper Evan Louro also comes noticeably out of the cage to pressure Brett. With Louro away from the goalmouth, the striker places a shot into the bottom left-hand corner to give the Hounds the lead and ultimately three points.

Tale of the Tape

The Hounds flashed creativity in the attacking third, but it was their work in the defensive third that kept them in the match. Pittsburgh allowed just nine total shots all game, which is less than half of what New York averaged per match heading into Wednesday.

With this effort, the team stayed in the game despite falling behind early and battled to come away with three points on the road.
