Pittsburgh defeats New York to extend unbeaten run to six; Charleston holds off Loudoun for road win

Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC defeated New York Red Bulls II on the road to kick off the first of two games in across the Championship tonight. Tom Barlow's 18th minute tally was cancelled out by Joe Greenspan's goal in the 36th minute, and Kenardo Forbes finished New York off with a goal in the 84th minute to win it. The loss for New York was their first at home this season, while Pittsburgh extended their unbeaten run to six games, winning five in that span.

In the second game of the evening, the Charleston Battery defeated Loudoun United FC, 2-1, off goals from Taylor Mueller and Dante Marini to give the hosts their first loss at the recently-opened Segra Field in Leesburg. Marini's winner came just after the hour mark as he collected a fantastic pass from teammate Kotaro Higashi and slotted home at the far post to help cushion his team's position at 9th place in the Eastern Conference.

Loudoun United FC (1) v Charleston Battery (2)

LEESBURG, Va. – The Charleston Battery handed Loudoun United FC their first loss at new venue Segra Field on Wednesday, holding on to defeat the hosts, 2-1, thanks to goals from defender Taylor Mueller and midfielder Dante Marini. The Battery were first off the mark in the 21st minute when Romario Piggott’s delivery was met by the head of Muller, who did well to send a sweeping effort to the far post past Loudoun goalkeeper Chris Seitz. Taking the lead through halftime, Charleston would double their lead just after the hour mark as midfielder Kotaro Higashi pushed a perfectly weighted pass through the defense for Marini to latch onto, and he pushed his shot to the far post and into the side netting. The hosts were able to claw one back in the 78th minute, though, after Battery goalkeeper Phil Breno spilled a cross and left substitute Orlando Sinclair little to do except touch the ball over the line with a header from point-blank range. However, the Battery showed their defensive prowess the rest of the way through and fended off a late attack from Loudoun to earn an important road win.

New York Red Bulls II (1) v Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (2)

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC defeated New York Red Bulls II, 2-1, to climb up to fourth in the Eastern Conference table and end New York’s unbeaten streak at home. New York started off the sharper of the two sides, pressing Pittsburgh in their own half and eventually causing the turnover that led to their lone goal. In the 20th minute, Red Bulls II forward Tom Barlow received a pass from midfielder Vincent Bezecourt after the turnover and produced a well-placed finish past Riverhounds SC goalkeeper Kyle Morton to open the scoring. As the half wore on, Pittsburgh stayed persistent on both ends of the field and got their goal off a corner kick as defender Joe Greenspan got a touch on the ball from midfielder Kenardo Forbes in the 36th minute. The two clubs continued to duel well into the second half, but it was Pittsburgh who landed the ultimate blow when, in the 84th minute, midfielder Anthony Velarde played in forward Neco Brett on the break, and Brett did the rest as he cut inside and calmly slotted home past Red Bulls II goalkeeper Evan Louro to earn all three points.
