The Portland Timbers II snapped their seven-match winless run with a 3-2 victory over 10-men New Mexico United on Sunday night at Providence Park. Earlier in the afternoon, Louisville City FC earned its second straight victory as five different players found the back of the net in a 5-1 home win over ATL UTD 2.

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Timbers 2 ended their seven-match winless streak with a hard-fought victory over New Mexico at Providence Park. Foster Langsdorf got the hosts off to a perfect start with a sensational strike in the third minute, chesting the ball to himself and volleying it into the top-left corner after New Mexico had failed to clear its lines from a corner kick. The Portland forward nearly doubled his tally for the evening in the 22nd minute when Eryk Williamson weaved through the New Mexico defense on his way to the byline and cut the ball back for Langsdorf, who saw his first-time shot beat goalkeeper Cody Mizell but get cleared off the line spectacularly by defender Rashid Tetteh. T2 continued its impressive attacking play after halftime as Jose Carlos Anguiano forced a diving save from Mizell with a left-footed curling effort from distance in the 54th minute and Ryan Sierakowski doubled the home side’s lead with a right-footed drive into the top-left corner from nearly 30 yards out four minutes later. New Mexico nearly had an instantaneous response as Devon Sandoval’s volley from the center of the box struck the post in the 60th minute and Kevaughn Frater skied a penalty kick four minutes later after Caleb Kiner had fouled Josh Suggs in the penalty area. United finally got on the board in the 72nd minute when Santi Moar dribbled by his defender and fired a rising shot from a narrow angle past T2 goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic, but the forward’s good work was undone two minutes later when Todd Wharton converted from 12 yards out after Toni Soler had fouled Langsdorf in the penalty area. The visitors’ task got that much harder after Manny Padilla was sent off for his second yellow card with six minutes remaining, but David Estrada’s close-range finish gave New Mexico hope with three minutes to play. NMU had one last chance deep in stoppage time from a corner kick but Portland cleared its lines to secure the three points.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville took victory for the second straight weekend with a strong performance against ATL UTD 2 at Slugger Field. The hosts opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Brian Ownby headed home Abdou Mbacke Thiam’s headed pass from close range for his first goal of the season. Thiam had a great chance to double the lead in the 39th minute when he took the ball off George Campbell at the top of the box, but the ATL UTD 2 defender made a lunging tackle to get back and block the forward’s effort at goal. Louisville would get its second goal just two minutes later however, as Alexis Souahy helped Oscar Jimenez’s corner onto Pat McMahon, who picked out the bottom-left corner with a left-footed finish for his first goal with the club. Ownby had a chance to make it three just before halftime when he provided a first-time shot to Antoine Hoppenot’s pullback but ATL UTD 2 goalkeeper Dylan Castanheira made himself big to shut down the one-on-one opportunity. The visitors cut the deficit in half in the 72nd minute when Jackson Conway tapped Jack Metcalf’s pass past LouCity goalkeeper Chris Hubbard to cap off a lovely flowing move and the forward was inches away from an equalizer less than 60 seconds later, striking the crossbar with another close-range chance. After getting away with one, the hosts ended any threat of a comeback two minutes later when Niall McCabe fired a free kick over the wall and beyond Castanheira from 25 yards out. Louisville piled the misery on ATL UTD 2 in the final 10 minutes as Luke Spencer added a fourth in the 83rd minute, beating Castanheira with a sweeping finish after Jimenez’s free kick delivery found its way to him at the top of the six-yard box, and Magnus Rasmussen rounded out the scoring two minutes later by powering George Davis IV’s cutback past Castanheira.
