Real Monarchs SLC moved up to sixth place in the Championship’s Western Conference standings as Douglas Martinez led the way in a five-goal romp at Zions Bank Stadium.

REAL MONARCHS SLC (5), TACOMA DEFIANCE (0)

HERRIMAN, Utah – Douglas Martinez became the 10th player to record a hat trick in the USL Championship this season as the Monarchs defeated the Defiance at Zions Bank Stadium for their fifth consecutive victory. The Monarchs took an early lead in the eighth minute when Masta Kacher made an interception in the attacking half and found Maikel Chang in the right side of the penalty area. The Cuban cut back inside past his marker and fired a left-footed shot that caromed in off the underside of the crossbar. Real continued to carry much of the play during the first half, and nine minutes before halftime Martinez doubled their lead as he ran onto a long pass forward by Joseph Okumu and powered a low finish into the left corner of the net. Tacoma came into the game at the start of the second half, but the Monarchs pulled away with Martinez leading the way. The Honduran notched his second of the night in the 67th minute, shooting home to the right corner after an initial shot by Julian Vasquez had been blocked, and he then completed his hat trick nine minutes later with a fine strike from 20 yards to the left corner. Jack Blake then wrapped up the scoring in his first appearance since April 26, marking his return to fitness with a finish in the 83rd minute that gave the Monarchs their fifth goal of the night, and fifth consecutive victory.
