TAMPA, Fla. – North Carolina FC goalkeeper Alex Tambakis has earned the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 16 of the 2019 season as his second-half stop that on a sharp chance against Saint Louis FC at World Wide Technology Soccer Park last Saturday night earned him top spot in the weekly poll.
The weekly award is Tambakis’ third this year and continues a campaign that has put him in the picture for the USL Championship’s Goalkeeper of the Year award at the midway point of the season. His latest standout save came early in the second half against STLFC as he scrambled across his net and got down low to deny Albert Dikwa’s first-time shot to keep the game level.
Tambakis’ save earned 35 percent of the poll conducted online at USLChampionship.com that concluded on Friday morning. Las Vegas Lights FC’s Thomas Olsen finished second on 26 percent for his diving save that capped a shutout display on the road against El Paso Locomotive FC, while Nico Corti of Rio Grande Valley FC and Rashid Nuhu of the New York Red Bulls II finished tied for third with 17 percent apiece.
