MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis 901 FC hosted an unprecedented atmosphere at AutoZone Park on Saturday night, sending a sold-out crowd home with memories for a lifetime.
Memphis welcomed Liga MX powerhouse C.F. Pachuca for the first international friendly in club history and 8,351 strong showed up to watch this historic event. The visitors took the match 6-1 as Elliot Collier scored Memphis’ only goal of the night.
Former English Premier League champion Leonardo Ulloa scored twice for Pachuca, but at the end of the match, the former Leicester City FC forward only focused on the host city and the atmosphere he saw Saturday night.
“[Memphis] is a very good team and it’s obvious based on how they played tonight,” Ulloa said. “The City of Memphis is a great city and we really enjoyed the atmosphere here.
“It was great to see the city support both teams.”
Collier echoed his opponent’s sentiments.
“I’ve said it before that we have the best fans in the league,” Collier said. “It was just an amazing atmosphere to play in.”
The night began with the night’s other special guest as Ja Morant – selected with the No. 2 pick of the NBA Draft on Thursday night by the Memphis Grizzlies – performed the pregame guitar smash as he was welcomed to his new home city.
The visitors then struck first after 10 minutes as Jonathan Copete opened the scoring, but Memphis hit back 10 minutes later as Collier found the net with a turning shot from inside the penalty area. The sides reached the halftime break level, but then the historic Liga MX side found another gear in the second half as Luis Gerardo Chávez put los Tuzos back on top three minutes after the break.
Ulloa then struck twice in four minutes just past the hour-mark to bolster Pachuca’s advantage before both Nahuel Bustos and Victor Guzman scored from long range in the final 10 minutes to round out the scoring.
