CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence announced on Thursday it had signed defender Clay Dimick. The hard work put into a three-month trial with the Independence contributed to the 24-year-old earning his way to the 2019 roster.
“It feels like a dream come true,” said Dimick. “This team feels like a family and I'm really close with a lot of guys on the team. They’ve pushed me to get better since I came in. Charlotte has become a home to me since I went to college in the area, so it's pretty cool to sign my first professional contract here.”
Most recently, Dimick was a standout for USL League Two sides the Charlotte Eagles and West Virginia Alliance FC. In 2018, the Atlanta native registered one goal in 14 games for the Eagles. A two-sport athlete out of high school, Dimick played four seasons at Belmont Abbey College where he led the Crusaders in goals for three consecutive seasons.
“Clay has been training with us from preseason and the start of the season,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “He's a very dedicated player and his persistence and willingness to work hard in training has landed him the opportunity the Independence. He can cover a number of different spots for us and he's a guy who hopes to make himself those around him, better players.”
The Independence return to action this Saturday night when they visit Louisville City FC at Slugger Field, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
