Fresno FC edges San Antonio FC thanks to Jemal Johnson brace, Chávez strike

A five-goal second half saw Fresno FC extend their unbeaten streak to three games by edging out San Antonio FC, 3-2, at Chukchansi Park despite a late push from the visitors to steal a late point.

FRESNO, Calif. – Outside a pair of yellow cards shown to Fresno’s Sam Strong and Jemal Johnson and a 29th minute substitution that saw midfielder Billy Forbes enter the match for San Antonio, the bulk of the action—and goals—came in the second half and in a blur. 56 minutes in, Johnson unleashed a rocket from 30 yards out, which SAFC goalkeeper Matt Cardone had little chance at saving, to open the scoring for his side. However, two minutes later, San Antonio forward Bradford Jamieson took a pass from Jose Gallegos to the top of the box and curled an effort past Fresno goalkeeper C.J. Cochran to level the scoring. Doubling up on their tally, Fresno were awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute that Johnson would bury one minute later to restore their lead, and six minutes after that forward Jamie Chávez got in behind the San Antonio defense and beat Cardone with an effort from close range to add a third. However, substitute midfielder Cristian Parano entrance in the 77th minute proved effective immediately for SAFC with the Argentine lining up a shot from just inside the box and pushing an effort to the far post and in to pull one back. Seeing the contest out, Fresno’s win marked the first for the club since May 22
