Nashville battles back to defeat Steel FC, leapfrogs into third place in Eastern Conference

After going behind midway through the first half, Nashville SC responded quickly to turn things around and extend its unbeaten streak to five games with a 4-1 victory over Bethlehem Steel FC on Sunday evening at McCarthy Stadium at La Salle University.

PHILADELPHIA – Nashville used a strong second-half performance to power past Steel FC. The visitors maybe should have been down to 10 men in the 23rd minute when Bradley Bourgeois fouled Faris from behind just outside the penalty area to deny a goalscoring opportunity, but the hosts made the most of the chance as James Chambers curled the resulting free kick past Connor Sparrow and into the bottom-right corner to give Steel FC the lead. It lasted just two minutes though as Nashville responded from a set piece of its own with Ken Tribbett rising highest to meet Lebo Meloto’s corner kick and nodding it past Carlos Coronel. The Bethlehem goalkeeper made another strong play nine minutes after halftime as he stuck out a leg to deny Ropapa Mensah from close range after the forward took an extra touch to settle Taylor Washington’s headed pass just outside the six-yard box. Mensah would get his goal in the 63rd minute however, as he beat the offsides trap and fired Meloto’s through ball into the roof of the net to give Nashville the lead for good. The visitors extended their lead seven minutes later when Coronel punched a ball away from a Nashville player only for it to land on the foot of Kosuke Kimura, who found the bottom-left corner with a first-time side-foot finish. Nashville compounded Bethlehem’s misery with seven minutes remaining when Mensah’s bicycle kick attempt was blocked by Anthony Fontana, but Cameron Lancaster arrived to sweep home the rebound from six yards out to complete a convincing comeback victory.
