Santi Moar’s influence once again lifts United in win over Austin Bold FC

AUSTIN, Texas – New Mexico United traveled to Bold Stadium in an another expansion showdown and came away 3-1 victors thanks to Santi Moar’s eighth and ninth goal of the season. Here are three takeaways from Austin:

  • LIKE HE NEVER LEFT: Santi Moar returned from suspension and put on a stellar display with two second-half goals leading New Mexico to its second consecutive victory. Moar’s tear began just before the half-hour mark when he forced a Bold FC own goal after blitzing down the left side of the field and cutting in before bouncing an effort off defender Amobi Okugo and in. After Austin’s equalizer in the 55th minute, Moar was at it again just after the hour mark when his powerful free kick picked up a deflection on its way through the wall but still beat Bold FC goalkeeper Juan David Ramirez. The Spaniard then capped off the evening with his second goal of the night, receiving a Devon Sandoval pass on the way through goal before skipping around Juan David Ramirez and clipping an effort to the far post and in. Moar now sits one behind teammate Kevaughn Frater (10) in the Golden Boot race.

  • HOME UNBEATEN STREAK SNAPPED: Bold FC opened Bold Stadium on April 17 with a 1-0 win over Phoenix Rising FC and had since strung together a home unbeaten run that spanned four games and saw them also defeat OKC Energy and Real Monarchs SLC while picking up a point against El Paso Locomotive FC. At the fifth time asking, New Mexico United proved to be too much for the hosts, who did well to pull level once. After a trip to Tulsa to face Roughnecks FC, Austin will have a shot at a new run when Portland visits on June 8.

  • SOMETHING IN THE AIR IN ALBUQUERQUE: Sitting four points back, second-place Phoenix Rising FC has a game in hand and third-place Fresno FC has three games in hand just five points back, but New Mexico United has not lost since April 20 and remain just one of two teams (FRS) in the Western Conference with just one loss through Week 12. United turn around to face OKC Energy FC on Wednesday, June 5 after U.S. Open Cup action midweek and the weekend off.
