Angulo helps Hartford edge Loudoun for first league victory; François fuels Fury past Steel

Jose Angulo scored two goals to reach 50 for his USL Championship career and help Hartford Athletic to its first league win in franchise history with a 2-1 victory over Loudoun United FC on Sunday afternoon at Audi Field.

Elsewhere, Christiano François scored a goal and added two assists to help Ottawa Fury FC claim back-to-back victories for the first time this season with a convincing 3-0 at Bethlehem Steel FC, while ATL UTD 2 overcame an early deficit to earn a point in 1-1 draw with the Swope Park Rangers at Children's Mercy Park.

BETHLEHEM STEEL FC (0) VS OTTAWA FURY FC (3)

CHESTER, Pa. – Fury FC’s first three-goal outing of the season saw it power past Steel FC at Talen Energy Stadium. The visitors made an early statement of attacking intent as Kévin Oliveira narrowly missed the bottom-right corner with a curling effort from the top of the box in the 12th minute and captain Carl Haworth saw a direct free kick saved by Bethlehem goalkeeper Carlos Miguel Coronel just four minutes later. Steel FC forward Faris raced behind the Ottawa defense in the 26th minute, but the forward’s left-footed strike just went wide of the far corner of Callum Irving’s goal after the goalkeeper came out to narrow the angle. Ottawa finally broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark as Christiano François tapped home Haworth’s right-wing cross at the back post to give his side the lead. Haworth and Oliveira had chances to double Fury FC’s advantage before the break, but the visitors had to wait until the 57th minute to get their second goal with Wal Fall curling home a right-footed shot into the bottom-right corner from François’ right-wing cutback. François tested Coronel in the 76th minute as Fury FC looked to put the game out of reach and the winger set up Ottawa’s third eight minutes from time as he raced down the right wing and squared for Mour Samb to tap home from close range to cap off a 2-on-0 break and a stellar performance from the visitors.

Christiano François, Ottawa Fury FC – François scored the opening goal and assisted on two more to headline Ottawa’s best attacking performance of the season.

SWOPE PARK RANGERS (1) VS ATLANTA UNITED 2 (1)

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – After taking an early lead, the Rangers were made to settle for a share of the spoils with ATL UTD 2. The home side got off to the perfect start just two minutes into the contest when Felipe Hernandez forced a turnover in the attacking third and then followed up with a left-footed finish past ATL UTD 2 goalkeeper Dylan Castanheira after Jerome Ngom Mbekeli had failed to get a shot away from the center of the area. The Rangers had a couple of chances to double their advantage before halftime as Mark Segbers just missed the target with a left-footed shot from the top of the box in the 28th minute and Gedion Zelalem forced Castanheira into a low save at his near post with a tight-angle shot from the right side of the six-yard box. The visitors started to work their way into the contest after halftime as George Campbell met Jack Metcalf’s cross with a left-footed volley that went straight at Swope Park goalkeeper John Pulskamp in the 50th minute and Yosef Samuel headed just over the crossbar from Mikey Ambrose’s left-wing free kick five minutes later. ATL UTD 2 finally saw its pressure pay off in the 68th minute when the Rangers failed to deal with a left-wing cross and Laurence Wyke expertly found the bottom-right corner with a left-footed volley. The Rangers came close to regaining the lead four minutes later as Sean Karani got to the byline and cut the ball back for Ethan Vanacore-Decker, who saw his shot from the left edge of the six-yard box saved by Castanheira. The two teams traded half-chances late in second-half stoppage time but neither could find a late winner as they settled for a point a piece.

Felipe Hernandez, Swope Park Rangers – Hernandez won 6 of 12 duels, made eight recoveries and scored the Rangers’ lone goal to earn his side a point at Children’s Mercy Park.

LOUDOUN UNITED FC (1) VS HARTFORD ATHLETIC (2)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Jose Angulo’s pair of second-half strikes led the Athletic over Loudoun for its first league win of the season. In an opening half devoid of many clear-cut chances, Hartford’s Mads Jorgensen had the visitors’ best look at goal just a minute before the break as his dipping drive from 35 yards out swerved just wide of the right post. Loudoun forward Kyle Murphy responded with the home side’s best effort of the half four minutes into stoppage time as he worked some space at the top of the box, but narrowly missed to the left of Jacob Lissek’s goal. The two sides traded chances after halftime as Angulo nearly missed the top corner with an acrobatic bicycle kick in the 52nd minute and Murphy probably should have put Loudoun in front four minutes later when he got on the end of Orlando Sinclair’s cross in the six-yard box but failed to hit the target. Hartford took advantage of the opening in the 59th minute as Angulo found the back of the net from a narrow angle after his initial effort was saved by Loudoun goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. The Athletic surrendered the lead five minutes later as Nikolaj Lyngo’s backpass had too much heat on it for Lissek to handle and ended up in the back of the net, but Hartford overcame the own goal in the 68th minute with Angulo taking Sebastian Dalgaard’s pass in the center of the box and firing a left-footed shot into the top-left corner to restore the lead. The Athletic had a couple of chances to add an insurance goal late on but wouldn’t need it as Jimmy Nielsen’s side held on to get in the win column for the first time this season.
