AUSTIN, Texas – Austin Bold FC earned its first ever victory in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup by defeating Western Conference rival Tulsa Roughnecks FC 2-0 on Tuesday night at Bold Stadium. The home side looked to set the pace in the early going and recorded the first quality chance of the evening in the 11th minute when Kleber got on the end of Sonny Guadarrama’s set-piece delivery and tested Tulsa goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar with a header from the center of the penalty area. The Roughnecks nearly took the lead with a set piece of their own 11 minutes later when Manny Gonzalez’s free kick beat Austin goalkeeper Diego Restrepo but was kept out by the woodwork.

Tulsa continued to apply the pressure as winger Akeil Barrett created a yard space on the left side of the penalty area with a couple of stepovers, but just flashed his curling shot wide of Restrepo’s left-hand post. It was Bold FC that would take the lead in the 34th minute though, as Sean McFarlane gathered a long ball on the right wing and then squared a pass for Guadarrama that was beautifully dummied on its way to the forward, who then made no mistake in slotting the ball past an outstretched Stajduhar and into the bottom-left corner. Tobenna Uzo had a couple of opportunities to get Tulsa back level but headed Anthony Legendre’s cross over the bar three minutes after going behind and missed the target with an ambitious bicycle kick effort 11 minutes after halftime. Stajduhar kept the visitors within a goal in the 67th minute with a fantastic one-on-one save to deny Kleber at the top of the penalty area and Roughnecks defenders reached the ball first to clear the danger and allow the goalkeeper to get back in position.

However, Austin doubled its advantage seven minutes later as McFarlane dribbled to the byline and cut out a perfect layoff for André Lima, who didn’t have to move as he directed the ball into the open bottom-left corner with his right boot. Fredlin Mompremier tested Restrepo with a shot from the left side of the box in the 78th minute but that was as close as the Roughnecks would come to getting back into the contest as their Open Cup run came to an end. Austin will advance to the Third Round, where it will host Texas rival San Antonio FC at Bold Stadium on Wednesday, May 29.
