MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis 901 FC announced on Monday it had acquired forward Lagos Kunga on loan from Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United FC for the remainder of the 2019 USL Championship season.

“Lagos is a different type of player for us,” said 901 FC Head Coach Tim Mulqueen. “He has tremendous speed and is very shifty. He’s someone I’ve known for a long time with the youth national team so when he became available, he was the perfect fit for us.”

A former member of the United States U-20 National Team, Kunga signed as an MLS Homegrown Player after coming through the club’s academy system. Born in Luanda, Angola, Kunga was raised in Atlanta and recorded 10 goals in 21 appearances for United’s U-18 side before entering the professional ranks.

He briefly played on loan with Atlanta’s then-Championship partner the Charleston Battery in 2017 before his Homegrown Player status went into effect with Atlanta United. Kunga’s spent 2018 with ATL UTD 2, scoring three goals and recording two assists in the club’s inaugural season.

Internationally, Kunga played for the U.S. U-20 National Team at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea. He made four appearances during the tournament and scored the sixth and final goal against New Zealand in a 6-0 victory which tied the United States’ record for largest margin of victory at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

“Lagos is a good, young winger,” said 901 FC Sporting Director Andrew Bell. “He’s got decent pace and also an eye for goal, and we’re very happy to welcome him to our group.”

Kunga and his new teammates are back in action Wednesday for Memphis’ Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match against New York Red Bulls U-23 at AutoZone Park.
